The Black Mink
Neovison vison or Mustela lutreola
Sleek, ruthless yet elegant predator with generally lustrous dark fur, which is highly esteemed; through other colour variations may occur through selective breeding of prized domesticated individuals. Difficult to be tamed by man but not impossible. Mink usually are found in sparsely populated rural areas; however, they occasionally live in suburban settings. They are predominantly nocturnal hunters. The Mink’s fur has been associated with high social status and individuals with the financial resources to afford such a garment.
The Mink's long slim body is covered in glossy, thick dark brown fur with a white patch under the chin or above its upper lip.
Apart from during mating rituals are solitary animals. Mating occurs from January through early April and after mating they can take over dens of other animals. Females regularly have a preference for multiple partners. Mink are generalist predators focusing on whatever prey is most available and easily captured. Nocturnal; and seek prey that they often kill for fun. The female mink is territorial but she will often seek to set up within male territories where the pickings are rich; though being solitary hunters they only seek the company of males for mating. Their scent, as well as their fur, is highly provocative to males and legendary. Hunts anything big enough to warrant its attention. Many are very wary of mink and its ruthless reputation is probably deserved and it is a danger to less successful species.
